Moms Last day...

Sixteen years ago today, my Mom died. On July 31, 2003 she passed away in an Ohio hospice. Cancer killed her. She called me in February with the news. I was working on the Oscar telecast in Century City. It hit me hard. I drove from LA to Toledo to help her and stayed there from Apri until July. We spent more time together then than since my boyhood. Memories of that time bring both smiles and tears. Today I remember Elizabeth Virginia Ayres Warn Lewandowski. I love you Mom.

Back home in bed after a scary night featuring three hour er visit after one am ride by paramedics in their ambo. Some sort of stroke-like event attacked me in my sleep. Thought it was my time to go. But it wasn’t. Thanks be to God. Now what?

Summer 2018. Day after Memorial Day. One year ago, I was hospitalized because my right big toe turned black from gangrene. After fits and starts, the toe was amputated on July 28 following related vascular surgery. That procedure followed earlier toe amputations in 2013 and 2014. Diabetes is no joke. I am blessed with the help of my live in caregiver Myerl who takes good care of me. Life after amputation is different, both better and worse. I lose my balance a lot and try hard not to fall down.Mostly,it has worked. From time to time, I take a fall. Insulin shots control my blood sugar numbers. Myerl controls my diet. My drive thru days are done. Just like so many other Life activities I used to enjoy: sex, cheese, milk, cookies,pies,standing, walking, going places. Anyways, this is my life today.
